Garden Writing & Speaking

First there was a garden.
Then there was a garden blog.
Then came books, speaking engagements, and an award from the Garden Writers Association.
There is an English proverb that says "More grows in the garden than is sown there."
I couldn't agree more.

Speaking of Gardening ...

I frequently speak about gardening to audiences large and small. I've appeared at venues such as the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show, the UC Botanical Garden, the Los Angeles County Arboretum, and the Southern California Spring Garden Show, as well as at numerous garden clubs. If you would like me to speak to your group or company, check out my listing at Great Garden Speakers for more information. You can also contact me using the email form on the Contact page of this site.

Writing about Gardening ...

My garden writing has included books, blogs, websites, and newspaper articles. My books are available through Amazon.com and other retailers, both online and brick-and-mortar. If your local bookseller doesn't have a book you want on their shelves, please ask and I'm sure they'll order it for you.

Praise for California Month-by-Month Gardening

"Claire Splan's California Month-by-Month Gardening takes the guesswork out of planting and maintenance for the state's gardeners. The book includes smart seasonal advice, such as planting sweet potatoes now for a Thanksgiving harvest."--Sunset Magazine, May 2015

Winner of a 2015 Silver Award of Achievement from the Garden Writers Association.

... and for California Fruit & Vegetable Gardening

"If you are just digging into your first edible garden this year, Splan's complete guide to growing edibles can pitch in with good advice from the seed starting stage to all-important harvesting techniques."--Cindy McNatt, Orange County Register

"Pretty handy for those who don't want to translate vegetable growing into California-speak. Splan covers them all and tells you when, how and where to plant every kind of edible, including herbs"-- Dirt Du Jour

"Claire's writing style, along with her gardening experience, will help California gardeners understand the quirky nature of growing in the Golden State. Just like the book says, 'It's the next best thing to having a master gardener as your neighbor.'" -- Jodi Torpey, VegetableGardener.com

The Blog That Began It All

I no longer blog at An Alameda Garden but if you'd like to read up on my very early struggles as a gardener, check it out here.
